Fidget spinners<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

ASHWAUBENON \u2013 Small, hand-held toys known as fidget spinners are the latest trend to hit classrooms, but one area school district has had enough.<\/p>\n

The small, hand-held toys with simple moving parts are thought to help students focus on their schoolwork.<\/p>\n

But Valley View Elementary School in Ashwaubenon is asking parents to keep them at home, at least this specific type of fidget.<\/p>\n

\u201cMany students are bringing these toys to school, causing some issues in class and on the playground,\u201d a post April 26, 2017, on the school\u2019s Facebook page read<\/a>. \u201c If your child has one of these, we are asking that you work with your child to keep them at home. As always, we appreciate your support.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fidgets have been around for some time, and come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes.<\/p>\n

According to a 2015 article in the New York Times blog, \u201cWell\u201d<\/a> fidgeting can help those with A.D.H.D. and have been growing in popularity.<\/p>\n

Others have found them helpful for students on the autism spectrum.<\/p>\n

\u201cInstead of telling children with hyperactivity and attention problems to sit still, perhaps we should encourage them to wriggle at will, according to a new study of children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or A.D.H.D. The study, in Child Neuropsychology, found that children with A.D.H.D. concentrate much better when they fidget than when they don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n

Some\u00a0parents who commented on the Valley View post\u00a0agreed.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think fidgets are a great tool. My daughter benefits from keeping her hands busy. Unfortunately some fidgets can lead to distraction, and this is one of them. (At least for my daughter, and some of her classmates.),\u201d one commenter wrote.<\/p>\n

On the other side is\u00a0an essay in Working Mother by Cristina Bolusi Zawacki, a teacher, who went on a bit of a rant:<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cThe only thing my students seem to focus on, however, is the spinner, itself, and not their work. It\u2019s like a friggin\u2019 siren song,\u201d she wrote. \u201cThe allure of someone else\u2019s spinner spinning is too much to bear. What color is it? What type is it? What shape is it? What\u2019s it made of? How many arms does it have? Are there removable ball bearings in it? What are THOSE made out of?<\/p>\n

\u201cThose are the worst part of these fidget spinners. When the ball bearings fall out in the midst of excessive, overzealous spinning and clatter all around my classroom floor mid-lesson, and they always do, it sounds like Plinko … in hell.\u201d<\/p>\n
